About Nautical Code Flags

Have you ever wondered what those colourful flags on boats and ships mean?

Well, each letter of the alphabet is represented by a specific flag, as shown in the picture above.  

The flags also have a coded meaning in the maritime world, so if a ship was displaying the 'E' flag, this means 'Altering Course to Starboard'.

The 'V' flag means 'Require Assistance', and the 'Z' flag means 'Require a Tug'. 

In my collection of nautical flag travel prints, the flags spell out the name of the coastal village or town.
